David's Inside Story: "I've lived with IBS for as long as I can remember."

I'm David Laughton, 53 years young, and for as long as I can remember I've had problems with my stomach. The doctors have always called it IBS.

I'm a prison officer and, although the job can certainly be stressful, I don't believe that's the cause of my IBS. It's something I've simply had to live with for years.

My symptoms were unpredictable. I had to be incredibly careful about what I ate and when I ate it. If I got it wrong, I'd end up with severe bloating and, at its worst, painful stomach cramps followed by diarrhoea.

Eating out was always a worry.

Like many people with IBS, I became an expert at researching where every toilet was... just to be on the safe side! It definitely knocked my confidence over the years.
