Think you may need a healthier gut? There was never a better time to rest your gut health than the start of a new year! Make 2025 the best year for your gut with our 6 simple tips.
There is so much noise at this time of year about health and wellbeing. From half price gym deals, to diet fads and gruelling work out plans - it's no wonder many people have fallen off the wagon come February. For those who suffer from IBS it isn't as easy as just getting on a treadmill or cutting out carbohydrates when it comes to looking after getting a healthier gut. The symptoms and triggers for each individual who has irritable bowel syndrome are so vast, there is not a "one size fits all" solution, unfortunately. However, for overall good gut health we have come up with some simple tips and hacks that will make sure you are looking after the basics when it comes to your gut and a great way to start you off on a great gut health journey for 2025!
Our gut isn't just about digestion, it’s a key player in your overall health, affecting everything from mood to immunity thanks to the complex ecosystem of microorganisms that live in the gastrointestinal tract - otherwise know as your gut
microbiome! The first important step towards health guts is to make sure you are looking after your microbiome and these simple tips will do just that.
Ditch the sugar
Sugars are naturally found in a range of foods including fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy. Consuming whole foods with natural sugars is not detrimental to our health, because the body digests them slowly and steadily supplies energy to its cells.
It's the refined processed sugar that is the bad guy of this story...
The white processed sugar you spoon into your cuppa, the fizzy cans in the fridge or the energy (that apparently give you wings...) All these products contain what is known as "free" sugars - free because it does not need to be broken down to release the sugar, meaning the body absorbs them much faster. These sugars are like "fast food" for harmful gut bacteria. When you cut back on excess sugar, you deprive the “bad guys” in your microbiome of their favourite food, allowing beneficial bacteria to thrive.
Top Tip: If you need to satisfy your sweet tooth try a couple of squares of dark chocolate with high cocoa content. It’s rich in flavonoids and prebiotic fibres that nourish your gut - yum!
Be your gut's best mate and hydrate!
Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your gut. Not only does it keeps things moving through your digestive system, avoiding constipation - water also aids nutrient absorption.
6-8 glasses a day is the sweet spot so why not treat yourself to a funky water bottle so you can hydrate on the go.
Top Tip: Add slices of lemon and sprigs of mint OR cucumber slices for a tasty twist.
Get Moving
Now, we're not jumping on the band wagon here and telling you to get to the nearest gym or join some strenuous bootcamp in the park - don't worry! Those with IBS can find exercise a challenge - especially when it comes to flare ups like painful cramping and diarrhoea - the last place you want to be is in a gym!
But a brisk walk, or a gentle yoga flow is so beneficial for your gut - improving digestion and promoting regular bowl movements.
Top Tip: Find a walking route where you know there is a public toilet - just in case and to take away any anxiety.
Support your microbiome
Introducing a probiotic supplement into your diet is a great way to support the complex make up of your gut microbiome and also help soothe IBS symptoms. Ferrocalm’s advanced probiotic formula helps keep your gut calm, even in stressed environments where other probiotics fail.
FX856 was identified over 10 years’ research and development by experts in gut health at the University of Bristol.
Unlike most probiotics, FX856 can survive and thrive in an environment where iron levels are high, as they are during stress or an active flare-up of a gut condition.
